Ipsenol

Ipsenol (2-Methyl-6-methylene-7-octen-4-ol) is a terpene alcohol that functions as a highly effective aggregation pheromone. In the context of plant protection and forestry, it is classified as a semiochemical attractant. It does not possess direct pesticidal activity, acting instead as a biological tool for the behavioural manipulation of target insect species.

The mechanism of action for ipsenol relies on its chemical structure, which mimics the natural pheromones produced by male bark beetles. When deployed in a trap, the volatilized ipsenol signals to other beetles of the same species that a suitable host tree has been found for colonization. This induces an aggregation response, drawing the pests into the trap rather than into living, vulnerable trees.

Ipsenol is primarily used in silviculture and coniferous forest management to target specific species such as the spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus). Its main purpose is twofold: population monitoring to determine infestation risk levels and mass trapping to reduce the overall density of pest populations in managed forest areas or log storage sites.

Application procedures require the careful placement of pheromone-baited traps, usually suspended from barriers or tripods. It is critical to position these traps correctly in relation to the prevailing wind and forest stand structure to ensure the pheromone plume effectively directs the insects to the trap entry point. Seasonal timing is equally important, as traps should be active immediately before the first spring flight of the beetles.

Safety precautions involve handling the chemical dispensers with clean, nitrile gloves to avoid contamination with human scents or oils. While the substance is not considered a toxic pesticide for humans, accidental contact with eyes or skin should be washed with soap and water. Keep the containers tightly sealed and refrigerated when not in use to maintain the integrity and potency of the active pheromone molecules.
