Cinnamaldehyde (3-phenyl-2-propenal) is an organic compound naturally derived from cinnamon essential oil. In modern agriculture, it serves as a potent bio-based pesticide, functioning as both a fungicide and an insecticide. Its role in sustainable and organic farming systems is critical, providing an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional synthetic chemicals.
The chemical class of this substance is phenylpropanoid. Its antifungal mode of action involves interfering with the synthesis of the fungal cell wall and disrupting cell membrane integrity, which halts the progression of infections. In pests, cinnamaldehyde acts primarily through contact, causing dehydration and immediate damage to the nervous and metabolic systems of small arthropods like mites and aphids.
Cinnamaldehyde is widely used to manage diseases such as powdery mildew, Botrytis, and various blights.
