Acequinocyl
Description
Acequinocyl is a highly selective acaricide belonging to the naphthoquinone chemical class. It is specifically formulated to provide rapid and long-lasting control of phytophagous mites in various agricultural systems. Due to its unique chemical structure, it serves as an essential tool for integrated pest management programs.
The mechanism of action of acequinocyl involves the inhibition of mitochondrial electron transport in the respiratory chain of the mite. By disrupting the energy production within the mitochondria, the compound effectively kills all mobile life stages of the target pests. This specific mode of action makes it highly effective against mites that have developed resistance to other classes of miticides.
Acequinocyl is widely used on a variety of crops, including high-value pome fruits like apples, as well as vegetables grown in greenhouses such as cucumbers and tomatoes. It is particularly effective against Tetranychidae species, including the common spider mite and European red mite, which can cause severe physiological stress to host plants.
The product provides excellent residual control, which helps in maintaining low pest populations over extended periods. Because it is not systemic, thorough coverage of the plant canopy is crucial to ensure that the chemical makes direct contact with the mites, which are often found on the undersides of leaves.
- Excellent knockdown effect combined with long-term residual activity.
- Effective in rotational programs to manage mite resistance.
- Favorable profile for many beneficial predatory mites when applied correctly.
When applying acequinocyl, farmers must follow the labeled rates and ensure optimal spray volume to cover the target area. Protective clothing, gloves, and eye protection are required during handling to prevent skin irritation or inhalation of spray mist. Furthermore, users should take precautions to avoid contaminating water sources, as the compound can be hazardous to aquatic organisms.
