Acetic acid
Description
Acetic acid is an organic compound utilized in agricultural practices primarily as a non-selective contact herbicide. Due to its natural origin, it has gained significant popularity as a viable tool for weed management within organic farming systems, providing a quick-acting solution for vegetation control.
The mechanism of action of acetic acid is based on the process of desiccation. Upon contact with the green foliage of weeds, the substance disrupts the waxy cuticle and damages the cellular membranes of the plant epidermis. This causes rapid dehydration and localized cell death, which is accelerated by exposure to direct sunlight, leading to visible wilting and discoloration within hours of application.
This product is mainly used for the control of annual broadleaf and grass weeds in their early growth stages. It is highly effective for weed management along fence lines, pathways, and around the base of fruit trees or vines where precise application is required to avoid damaging the target crops. Additionally, dilute solutions are sometimes researched for use as a mild disinfectant or fungicide for treating planting materials against surface pathogens.
When applying acetic acid, environmental conditions play a crucial role in efficacy. The best results are achieved during sunny, dry conditions with temperatures above 20°C. Unlike systemic herbicides, acetic acid does not translocate through the plant's vascular system, meaning it generally does not kill the root system of perennial weeds, which may necessitate multiple applications to prevent regrowth.
Safety precautions are essential when handling acetic acid, as it is a corrosive substance that can cause severe irritation. Operators must wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves, eye protection, and respiratory masks.
- Avoid spray drift onto desirable crops, as the chemical causes burn injuries to any green tissue it touches.
- Store the concentrate in a secure, leak-proof container out of reach of children.
- In case of skin or eye contact, rinse immediately and thoroughly with plenty of water and seek medical advice if necessary.
