Description
Akanthomyces muscarius (formerly Lecanicillium muscarium) strain Ve6 is a naturally occurring entomopathogenic fungus that has been developed into a potent biological control agent. It serves as a vital tool in modern agricultural practices, specifically for managing pest populations in greenhouses and indoor agricultural environments.
This agent is classified as a biological insecticide. Unlike synthetic chemical insecticides, this fungus works by infecting the host insect directly. It is designed to be highly specific to certain arthropod pests while remaining safe for the crops, the environment, and human handlers when applied correctly.
The mode of action is purely biological: conidia (spores) attach to the insect's cuticle. Upon contact, if humidity is sufficient, the spores germinate and produce specialized structures to penetrate the exoskeleton using a mix of mechanical pressure and enzymes. Once inside, the fungus colonizes the body cavity, destroying tissues and releasing toxins, which results in the death of the pest.
The strain Ve6 is particularly effective against several major agricultural pests, including:
- Whiteflies (Trialeurodes vaporariorum and Bemisia tabaci)
- Aphids (various species)
- Thrips
- Spider mites
For optimal efficacy, applications must be timed to coincide with favorable environmental conditions. High humidity (typically above 70%) is essential for spore germination and infection success. Users should avoid applying fungicides simultaneously, as they can inhibit the viability of the fungal spores.
