Alkyl mercury compounds are a class of organomercury pesticides that were historically significant in global agriculture, primarily employed as effective fungicidal seed treatments. Their unique chemical structure allowed for exceptional stability on the seed coat and systemic protection against seed-borne pathogens during the critical early stages of germination.

These compounds were extensively used to combat various fungal diseases, such as smut and bunt in cereal crops, as well as soil-borne pathogens that caused seedling blight.
