Aluminium silicate (kaolin)

Description

Aluminium silicate, widely known in agriculture as kaolin, is a naturally occurring clay mineral utilized as a physical-barrier crop protectant. Unlike traditional synthetic pesticides that target the nervous or digestive systems of insects, kaolin operates by creating a non-toxic, mineral-based layer on the foliage and fruit surface.

Its primary classification is as an insect repellent and a heat-stress management agent. The mechanism of action is two-fold: it changes the optical signature of the plant, rendering it unrecognizable or unattractive to pests like moths, beetles, and mites, and it acts as an effective solar reflector, cooling the leaf surface and preventing sunburn on fruits.

Kaolin is successfully applied across various horticultural crops, including stone fruits, pome fruits, grapes, and various vegetables. It is particularly valued in integrated pest management (IPM) and organic production systems where minimizing chemical residue is critical. It is effective against leafhoppers, fruit flies, psyllids, and other foliage-feeding insects.

Key application aspects involve the thorough coverage of the plant surface. Because the effectiveness depends entirely on the physical presence of the white film, application must be meticulous. It is usually applied as an aqueous suspension, and the process may require repeated treatments as the plant continues to grow and expand its canopy or if heavy rainfall washes the protective film away.
