Gamma-aminobutyric acid
Description
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a non-protein amino acid recognized in modern agronomy as a potent plant signaling molecule and biostimulant. Unlike synthetic pesticides, GABA functions by modulating plant physiological processes, acting as a metabolic mediator that enhances plant response to external environmental pressures.
The mechanism of action involves GABA accumulation in tissues, which helps maintain intracellular pH balance and stabilizes reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. By triggering protective signal transduction pathways, GABA enables plants to manage oxidative stress, which is essential for survival during periods of environmental volatility.
GABA is effectively applied across diverse crop types, including fruit trees, vineyards, greenhouse vegetables, and industrial grains. Its primary use is to mitigate yield losses caused by water deficit, salinity, and extreme temperature fluctuations, making it a critical tool for climate-resilient farming systems.
Regarding application, GABA is best utilized through foliar sprays or fertigation during pre-stress periods or immediately following mechanical or chemical injury. Farmers should be aware that while GABA promotes growth, it works best when integrated into a holistic nutrition program rather than as a standalone solution for poor soil management.
Safety precautions for handling GABA products involve the use of standard personal protective equipment (PPE) as defined by local safety regulations. Although the substance is relatively safe, containers must be kept tightly closed in a cool, ventilated area away from direct sunlight to preserve the chemical stability of the bioactive formulation.

- Promotion of nutrient uptake and translocation.
- Recovery support post-herbicide application.
