This property is the primary driver behind its utility in pest management strategies.

The mechanism of action centers on the olfactory irritation caused by the ammonia vapors. Many subterranean pests, such as moles and certain insects, possess highly sensitive sensory organs that react negatively to the pungent smell of ammonia. By creating a concentrated gaseous environment within the pest's nesting area or tunnel systems, the substance effectively forces them to migrate to less hostile habitats.

This substance is primarily applied in vegetable gardens, landscape maintenance, and orchards to mitigate damage caused by burrowing animals and ground-dwelling pests. Because it does not contain synthetic toxins that remain in the soil for years, it is often preferred in organic or integrated pest management programs where environmental safety is a critical requirement.
