The mechanism of action involves the release of ammonia into the soil profile. This process creates a temporary zone of high toxicity that eliminates harmful nematodes, soil-dwelling insects, and various fungi. Once the chemical dissipates and stabilizes, the remaining ammonium ions are converted by soil microbes into nitrates, providing a vital nutrient boost for developing plants.

The substance is primarily applied before planting major crops such as cereals, potatoes, and various vegetables. It is particularly valued in greenhouse operations and intensive field farming for its ability to sterilize the topsoil, effectively reducing the need for post-emergence synthetic pesticide applications during the early vegetative stages.
