Description
Ammonium sulphate is a key chemical compound extensively used in agriculture, serving dual roles as a nitrogen-sulfur fertilizer and as a powerful adjuvant in pesticide applications. It is a crystalline, water-soluble salt that enhances the delivery and performance of foliar-applied agrochemicals.
In the field of crop protection, ammonium sulphate is classified as a water conditioner and herbicide activator. Its primary purpose is to address issues caused by hard water, such as high concentrations of calcium, magnesium, or iron, which can inhibit the performance of many systemic herbicides.
The mechanism of action involves the ammonium ion binding with metallic cations in the water, preventing them from complexing with the herbicide molecules. Furthermore, the sulphate component promotes better absorption of the active ingredient through the plant cuticle, significantly improving weed control results.
It is predominantly used on crops such as corn, wheat, soy, and sugar beet, especially when spraying systemic herbicides like glyphosate. By adjusting the water quality and lowering the pH, it ensures the stability and bio-availability of the pesticide applied to the target weeds.
