Description
Common mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris L.) is a perennial plant of the Asteraceae family. While often considered a weed in many cropping systems, it serves as a valuable biological source for developing eco-friendly crop protection agents due to its complex chemical profile.
In agronomy, it is classified as a source of botanical pesticides. The chemical composition includes essential oils, thujone, cineole, and various bitter sesquiterpene lactones. These compounds are responsible for the plant's potent insecticidal, fungicidal, and herbicidal (allelopathic) properties.
The mechanism of action involves disrupting the nervous and digestive systems of pests. It acts primarily as an antifeedant, preventing insects from consuming plant foliage, and as a repellent. Additionally, the compounds exhibit antifungal activity by interfering with the germination of fungal spores on plant surfaces.
Mugwort extracts are applied to various vegetables and fruit crops, particularly in organic farming settings. It is effective against soft-bodied insects like aphids, mites, and various larval stages of Lepidoptera, providing a natural barrier against seasonal infestations.
Regarding application and safety, users should be aware that high concentrations of botanical extracts can cause phytotoxicity. It is recommended to perform small-scale testing before field application and to apply treatments during cool hours to preserve the stability of volatile essential oils.
