Aureobasidium pullulans (strains DSM 14940 and DSM 14941)

Aureobasidium pullulans is a naturally occurring yeast-like fungus used as a biological fungicide. The specific strains DSM 14940 and DSM 14941 are highly regarded in agricultural practice for their ability to protect various horticultural crops from damaging fungal infections without the use of harsh synthetic chemicals.

The mechanism of action relies primarily on competitive exclusion. Once applied, these fungal strains colonize the surface of leaves and fruit, effectively occupying the space and nutrients that would otherwise be used by fungal pathogens to establish infection. By outcompeting harmful fungi for these essential resources, the agent prevents disease development from the start.

This biological agent is used on a variety of crops, such as grapes, strawberries, apples, and pears. Its primary application target is the suppression of post-harvest diseases, most notably grey mold (Botrytis cinerea), which is a common cause of spoilage in fresh produce. It is widely applied both in the field and as a post-harvest dip or spray treatment.

The application of this product requires complete and uniform coverage of the crop surface, as its mode of action is strictly contact-based. Because the active ingredient is a living organism, storage and handling conditions must be followed to ensure the viability of the strains until the moment of application. It is often integrated into IPM (Integrated Pest Management) programs.

Precautions should be taken to ensure operator safety, including the use of basic protective clothing and respiratory protection when mixing large quantities. However, since the substance is of natural origin, it poses minimal risk to humans and the environment. It leaves no chemical residues, making it an excellent choice for produce destined for fresh market sales.
