Bacillus sphaericus is an aerobic, spore-forming Gram-positive bacterium utilized primarily as a biological insecticide. It is a key active ingredient in microbial pest control products, specifically valued for its ability to target and manage populations of certain dipteran insect larvae that impact agricultural environments and livestock health.

The mode of action for this bacterium involves the production of crystalline proteins during sporulation. Upon ingestion by the target larvae, these protein crystals are solubilized in the alkaline environment of the insect's midgut. The resulting activated toxins bind to specific receptors in the midgut lining, causing epithelial damage, feeding cessation, and ultimately the death of the larvae.

In agronomic practice, this agent is primarily employed to suppress mosquito populations in stagnant water bodies near pastures or crop fields. By targeting the larval stage, it provides a preventative approach to pest management, significantly reducing the impact of these insects without resorting to broad-spectrum chemical insecticides that could damage the local ecosystem.
