Description

Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. Aizawai strain ABTS-1857 is a highly effective, naturally occurring soil bacterium used globally as a biological insecticide. This specific strain produces a unique complex of proteins, including delta-endotoxins, which are highly toxic to lepidopteran larvae. It is widely valued in integrated pest management (IPM) programs due to its high target specificity, which spares beneficial predators, parasitoids, and pollinators.

The mechanism of action is ingestion-based. Once a susceptible caterpillar consumes the plant tissue treated with the bacteria, the crystal proteins enter the insect's midgut. The alkaline pH within the gut solubilizes these crystals, converting them into active toxins. These toxins bind to the epithelial lining of the gut, causing pores to form and disrupting the digestive process. The insect stops feeding almost immediately and dies within a few days from septicemia and starvation.

This biological agent is used on a wide range of crops, including vegetables, fruits, grapes, and various field crops. It is specifically targeted against larval stages of Lepidoptera, such as armyworms, loopers, fruit moths, and diamondback moths. The ABTS-1857 strain is particularly noted for its efficacy in controlling caterpillars that have developed resistance to synthetic chemical pesticides, offering farmers a crucial tool for resistance management.

For optimal application, uniform coverage of foliage is essential as the product must be consumed by the pest. It is most effective when applied to early-instar larvae, as younger insects are more susceptible to the toxin. Because the active protein can be degraded by ultraviolet light, field applications should ideally take place during the early morning or late evening hours. Environmental conditions such as moderate temperature and humidity enhance the persistence of the bacteria on the leaf surface.
