Description
Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. Kurstaki (strain EG2348) is a powerful biological insecticide specifically targeted against lepidopteran larvae. As a naturally occurring soil bacterium, this strain is an essential component of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs, offering a sustainable way to control chewing insects while minimizing ecological impact on non-target species.
The mechanism of action involves the production of delta-endotoxins (Cry proteins) during the bacterial sporulation phase. When ingested by a susceptible larva, the alkaline environment of the insect's midgut activates these crystalline proteins. The activated toxins bind to the gut wall, creating pores that lead to tissue degradation, rapid cessation of feeding, and the death of the pest through sepsis and starvation.
This biological agent is used on a variety of crops, including vegetables, fruit trees, and ornamental plants. It is highly effective against major pests such as cabbageworms, tomato hornworms, loopers, leafrollers, and various moths. By targeting the larval stage, it prevents damage to leaves, stems, and fruits, which is crucial for maintaining both crop quality and overall yields.
Application effectiveness is highly dependent on timing and coverage. The product should be applied when the larvae are in the early stages of development, as they are most susceptible and feed most actively at this time. Ensuring thorough coverage of the plant foliage is critical because the insect must ingest the bacteria to trigger the lethal reaction.
