Active ingredient

Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. Kurstaki strain PB 54

Description

Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. Kurstaki strain PB 54 is a specialized biological insecticide derived from a specific bacterial strain known for its potent entomopathogenic properties. This active ingredient is widely utilized in organic and integrated pest management systems as a sustainable alternative to conventional synthetic chemistry.

The mode of action is strictly intestinal. Once ingested by the larvae, the crystalline parasporal inclusion proteins are solubilized in the alkaline environment of the insect's midgut. These activated toxins bind to specific receptors on the gut lining, causing cell lysis and paralysis of the digestive system, which leads to immediate cessation of feeding and subsequent insect mortality.

It is primarily registered for use on various vegetable crops, orchard trees, and greenhouse plants. The target spectrum is limited to lepidopteran larvae, including cabbage loopers, diamondback moths, various species of cutworms, and fruit tortrixes. It serves as an essential tool for farmers looking to minimize chemical residues on produce.

Application strategies require precise timing and thorough coverage of the target foliage. Because the product is not systemic, success depends on the larvae consuming the active substance. It is most effective when applied at the early larval stages (first and second instars) and when temperatures are warm enough to support larval feeding activity.

Safety precautions during handling include wearing protective clothing, gloves, and respiratory masks to prevent irritation from dust or spray mists. While non-toxic to humans, pets, and pollinators, it should be stored in a cool, dark place to maintain spore viability. The product is highly compatible with integrated programs, as it does not negatively impact beneficial insect populations when used as directed.
