Granulovirus

Granulovirus (Baculovirus GV) is a powerful biological insecticide belonging to the Baculoviridae family. This specialized viral agent acts as an entomopathogen, specifically targeting lepidopteran pests, which makes it a cornerstone of biological pest management strategies in modern sustainable agriculture.

The mechanism of action is highly specific: when a larva ingests the viral granules from the surface of treated foliage or fruit, the alkaline environment of the insect's gut dissolves the protective protein matrix. The released virus particles then penetrate the gut cells, initiating a rapid infection that stops the pest from feeding almost immediately and leads to its death within a few days.

This active substance is primarily used to control the codling moth (Cydia pomonella) in pome fruit orchards, including apples, pears, and walnuts. Unlike broad-spectrum chemical insecticides, the Granulovirus does not disrupt the balance of the ecosystem, as it leaves beneficial insects, predators, and pollinators completely unharmed.

For successful application, proper timing is essential. Since the virus is effective only if ingested by neonate larvae, treatments must be synchronized with the peak hatching period of the codling moth eggs. Due to its sensitivity to UV light, applications are recommended in the late afternoon or evening to maximize the residual activity of the viral granules on the crop surface.

Handling and safety profile of Granulovirus products are excellent, as they pose no risk to humans, mammals, or the environment. It is compatible with most organic farming standards and can be rotated with other biological agents to prevent resistance management issues. Proper storage in cool conditions is required to maintain the viability and shelf life of the viral preparation.
