Vermicompost

Description

Vermicompost, often referred to as biohumus, is the end product of the breakdown of organic matter by earthworms. In agronomy, it is classified as a biologically active substance acting as a plant growth stimulant and soil conditioner rather than a synthetic chemical pesticide. Its complex chemical profile includes humic and fulvic acids, enzymes, vitamins, and bioavailable macro- and micronutrients.

The mechanism of action of vermicompost involves the stimulation of metabolic pathways within plant cells and the optimization of the soil microbiome. Humic substances enhance cell membrane permeability, facilitating the efficient uptake of nutrients from the soil solution. Furthermore, vermicompost suppresses the proliferation of various soil-borne phytopathogens through high concentrations of beneficial microbial antagonists.

The product is suitable for a wide range of agricultural crops, including vegetables, fruits, berries, cereals, and ornamentals. Its primary purpose is to increase seed germination rates, strengthen seedling immunity, promote robust root development, and accelerate plant recovery after transplanting. It is also extensively used for the reclamation of degraded and low-fertility soils.

Application methods involve the use of liquid extracts (humates) for foliar feeding, seed soaking, or root irrigation, as well as the direct incorporation of solid substrate into planting rows. Vermicompost demonstrates peak efficiency under conditions of adequate soil moisture and moderate temperatures, which fosters the proliferation of essential soil biota.

There are virtually no safety precautions required when handling vermicompost, as it is an environmentally benign and non-toxic substance for humans and animals. However, it is essential to store the material away from direct sunlight and prevent desiccation to maintain the viability of the beneficial microorganisms that characterize high-quality vermicompost.
