Blood meal is an organic byproduct obtained from the drying and grinding of animal blood, primarily used in agriculture as a high-nitrogen fertilizer and a biological repellent. It is a dense source of essential amino acids and nutrients that can significantly enhance soil fertility and promote vigorous plant growth when applied correctly by farmers and gardeners.

The mechanism of action as a pest deterrent relies on the olfactory response of herbivores. Many mammals, including deer, rabbits, and rodents, detect the scent of dried blood and instinctively associate it with a potential predator or danger, prompting them to avoid the treated area. This provides a non-toxic method of protecting crops from physical grazing and damage, particularly during the early stages of plant development.

Blood meal is utilized across a variety of horticultural and agricultural sectors, including vegetable production and landscaping. Its primary role in plant protection is supplemented by its function as a fast-acting nitrogen boost. The nitrogen present in the product is readily available for plant uptake, which promotes dark green foliage and rapid vegetative development, making it an excellent choice for nitrogen-loving crops like corn or brassicas.
