Description
Brodifacoum is a highly potent active substance belonging to the chemical class of second-generation hydroxycoumarin derivatives. It is primarily used as a powerful rodenticide designed to control and eradicate various rodent populations, including rats, mice, and voles, in both agricultural and urban environments.
The mechanism of action relies on the inhibition of vitamin K1-dependent blood clotting factors. By blocking the recycling of vitamin K1 in the liver, brodifacoum prevents the production of essential coagulation factors. This leads to internal hemorrhaging, which is eventually fatal for the target pest, typically occurring a few days after the ingestion of the bait.
In agricultural practice, brodifacoum is applied in fields, orchards, grain storage facilities, and livestock buildings. Its high toxicity and cumulative effect make it a preferred choice for managing pest infestations where rodents have developed resistance to first-generation anticoagulants or where rapid control is required.
The use of this substance is characterized by its long-lasting efficacy even with a single feeding. Rodenticides containing brodifacoum are typically formulated as ready-to-use baits, such as cereal pellets, blocks, or gels. These formulations are designed to be palatable to rodents while maintaining stability in various environmental conditions, including high humidity.
- Deployment of bait in secured tamper-resistant stations.
- Strategic placement to minimize exposure to non-target species.
- Mandatory use of protective equipment during application.
- Regular inspection and collection of dead rodents to prevent secondary poisoning.
Safety precautions are paramount when handling brodifacoum due to its high toxicity to mammals and birds. Users must ensure that bait stations are placed in areas inaccessible to children and pets. Proper handling involves wearing gloves to avoid skin contact and ensuring that all remaining bait is properly secured or disposed of according to local environmental regulations.
