Description

Taxonomic position. The Common vole (Microtus arvalis) belongs to the order Rodentia and the family Cricetidae. It is a highly significant agricultural pest recognized for its periodic population outbreaks, which can cause devastating economic damage to crops across temperate regions.

Affected crops. As a generalist herbivore, the Common vole feeds on a wide range of agricultural plants. It primarily affects cereals, legumes, forage grasses, sugar beets, and various vegetable crops. In orchards and nurseries, these rodents often gnaw the bark of fruit trees, especially during winter months, causing severe damage or mortality to young plants.

Biology and development. The species is characterized by an extremely high reproductive rate. Under favorable conditions, females can produce several litters per season, with each litter containing multiple offspring. Sexual maturity is reached rapidly, allowing the population density to increase exponentially during favorable years, often leading to sudden outbreaks.

Nature of damage. Common voles consume both vegetative parts and reproductive tissues of plants. They create intricate burrow systems, which lead to soil disturbance and root damage. Their feeding habits result in significant crop loss, reduced grain yield, and lower quality of harvested products due to both direct consumption and contamination of the field.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for effective control:

  • Implementing deep tillage to destroy burrow systems.
  • Maintaining clear field edges to reduce habitat suitability.
  • Using authorized rodenticides as baiting treatments during peak activity periods.
  • Enhancing biological control by providing nesting sites for raptors such as kestrels or owls.
