Buprofezin

Its primary purpose is the management of homopteran pests, which are known for causing significant damage to crops by sucking plant sap and transmitting various plant diseases.

The mechanism of action of buprofezin is distinct as it functions as an insect growth regulator (IGR). It specifically inhibits the biosynthesis of chitin in the insect's exoskeleton. When larvae come into contact with the substance, they are unable to complete their molting process, which eventually leads to their death. Additionally, it has a sterilization effect on adult females, reducing the number of eggs laid and their subsequent hatching rate.

Buprofezin is primarily used to control whiteflies, scale insects, mealybugs, and leafhoppers. It is applied across various sectors, including greenhouses, open-field vegetable production (such as tomatoes and cucumbers), citrus orchards, and ornamental plant nurseries. It is an excellent choice for integrated pest management (IPM) programs as it is generally non-toxic to most predatory insects and beneficial mites.

When applying buprofezin, it is crucial to ensure thorough coverage of the plant foliage, as the substance exhibits limited systemic movement. Timing is essential for success: applications should target the early nymphal stages of pests, when they are most susceptible to the compound. Because it acts by disrupting growth cycles rather than acting as a fast-acting neurotoxin, visual results may take several days to become apparent.
