San Jose scale

Comstockaspis perniciosa

Description

The San Jose scale (Comstockaspis perniciosa) is a devastating armored scale insect belonging to the order Hemiptera, family Diaspididae. Known as a major pest of fruit crops worldwide, it poses a significant threat to agricultural stability, particularly in commercial orchards where it can rapidly reduce fruit quality and tree vigor.

The pest has a wide host range, primarily targeting woody perennials. The most susceptible plants include apple, pear, plum, peach, and cherry trees. While the scale primarily attacks bark, it also infests fruit and leaves. Although it is not a primary threat to crops like rapeseed, cucumber, or cereal grains, its presence in diversified farms requires strict monitoring to prevent migration to susceptible host orchards.

The biological cycle of the San Jose scale involves the production of live crawlers, which are the only mobile life stage. After moving to a suitable location on the host plant, the crawler settles, secretes a protective, wax-like scale cover, and begins feeding. The insect overwinters primarily as immature nymphs beneath these protective covers, resuming development as temperatures rise in the spring.

Damage is caused by the insect injecting toxic saliva into plant tissues while feeding on sap. This process leads to tissue necrosis, deformation of shoots, and the development of distinct red halos around the feeding sites on fruits. Severe infestations can cause leaf drop, twig dieback, and eventually the death of entire trees if left untreated, leading to massive financial losses for growers.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. During the dormant season, horticultural oils are applied to smother overwintering nymphs. During the growing season, timing is critical: insecticides must be applied precisely during the crawler emergence period, as the scale cover is not yet hardened and the insects are most vulnerable. Consistent scouting and the removal of heavily infested wood are essential components of a successful control program.
