Calcium carbide is a chemical compound widely utilized in agriculture primarily as a soil fumigant. When it comes into contact with moisture in the soil, it undergoes a rapid chemical reaction, producing acetylene gas. This gas acts as the active agent, permeating underground tunnels and burrows to manage soil-dwelling pests.

The product is categorized as a specialized fumigant used for rodent control. It is particularly effective against burrowing animals such as moles, voles, and ground squirrels that damage agricultural crops, gardens, and landscaping. It serves as an alternative to chemical baits, providing a mechanical way to clear areas of infestation.

The mechanism of action relies on the displacement of oxygen by acetylene within enclosed subterranean spaces. As the gas fills the tunnels, it creates an environment that prevents rodents from breathing. This forced displacement often results in the immediate departure of the pests from the treated area or, in confined spaces, leads to asphyxiation.

Application requires placing a specific amount of granules directly into active burrows or tunnels. To be effective, the entrance must be sealed immediately with soil or sod to prevent gas leakage. The presence of soil moisture is essential for the reaction to initiate, making this method most effective in moderately damp soil conditions rather than dry, sandy soils.

Safety is the primary concern when working with calcium carbide due to its potential to produce flammable and explosive acetylene gas. Smoking, welding, or any source of ignition must be strictly avoided during application. Furthermore, the product must be stored in airtight, moisture-proof containers to prevent accidental gas release and fire hazards during storage.
