Calcium carbonate is categorized in modern agriculture as a mineral-based physical control agent. Unlike conventional synthetic pesticides, it acts through mechanical and physical properties rather than chemical toxicity, making it a sustainable tool for integrated pest and stress management programs in various horticultural systems.

The mechanism of action relies on the application of a fine-particle film over the crop surface. This barrier increases the albedo of the leaves and fruits, effectively reflecting solar radiation. By reducing the absorption of infrared and ultraviolet light, it significantly lowers the plant surface temperature and mitigates the risk of heat-induced damage.

Primary applications include pome fruits, stone fruits, and grapes, where protection against heat stress and sunburn is critical for maintaining marketability. Additionally, the presence of the film creates an abrasive and deterrent surface that interferes with the ability of various insect pests to land, feed, or oviposit on the crop.

Successful implementation requires thorough and uniform coverage of all exposed plant tissues. As the plant continues to grow or if rainfall events occur, the protective layer may lose its density, necessitating re-application to maintain the barrier's integrity throughout the high-risk periods of the growing season.

Safety precautions focus on preventing the inhalation of dust particles during the mixing process, as the material is generally non-toxic and environmentally benign. It does not leave harmful residues on the produce, though producers should be aware that harvested fruit might require washing or wiping to remove any visible mineral dust before distribution to the consumer market.
