Description

Calcium carbonate (commonly known as chalk or limestone) is recognized in modern agriculture as a physical protectant for crops. It functions as an inert, non-toxic mineral barrier that protects plant surfaces from environmental damage, specifically high solar radiation and extreme heat stress.

The mechanism of action relies on the optical properties of the calcium carbonate layer. By creating a white, reflective film over the foliage and fruit, the substance effectively bounces back UV and infrared rays. This action significantly reduces the leaf and fruit surface temperature, preventing sunburns and reducing transpiration rates.

It is primarily utilized in high-value horticulture, such as apple, pear, citrus, and table grape production. By shielding fruit from heat damage, it preserves the quality, color, and marketability of the produce. Furthermore, it creates a tactile barrier that may discourage certain insects from settling or feeding on the treated surfaces.

Application requires uniform coverage using specialized sprayers to ensure the entire crop surface is coated. Because the material is applied as a suspension, its efficacy is dependent on maintaining the layer against weathering. Re-application is typically necessary following heavy rain events that wash away the protective film.

Regarding safety, calcium carbonate is an environmentally friendly choice with no residues or toxicity risks for humans or beneficial insects. The only precaution to observe during the preparation and mixing stage is to prevent the inhalation of fine dust particles by wearing standard protective masks, ensuring a safe and efficient workflow in the field.
