Description

Camphechlor, frequently identified as toxaphene, is an organochlorine pesticide consisting of a complex mixture of chlorinated camphenes. Known for its persistent nature, this compound was historically used as a powerful insecticide. Due to its significant environmental persistence and propensity for bioaccumulation in the food chain, its production and application are strictly prohibited globally under international agreements.

The mechanism of action of camphechlor involves the disruption of the nervous system of insects. As an organochlorine, it acts by interfering with the sodium channels in nerve cell membranes. This leads to repetitive neuronal firing, causing involuntary muscular contractions, paralysis, and eventually the death of the pest. It served as both a contact and a stomach poison for various insect species.

Throughout its period of use, camphechlor was applied on a wide variety of field crops, particularly cotton, but also on cereals, soybeans, and corn. It was highly valued by farmers for its longevity and effectiveness against complex pest populations, such as leaf-eating caterpillars and various beetle species, providing protection that lasted for weeks due to its resistance to degradation.

A critical characteristic of camphechlor is its persistence in soil and water. The chemical is characterized by low volatility and low solubility in water, but it binds strongly to soil particles. Because it does not break down easily, it can remain in the environment for decades, posing significant risks to soil health and long-term ecosystem stability, particularly affecting aquatic invertebrates and fish species.
