Carbetamide

Carbetamide is a selective systemic herbicide belonging to the carbamate chemical class. It is primarily utilized in agricultural practice to manage a wide range of annual grasses and some broad-leaved weeds, demonstrating high efficacy in perennial forage crops.

The mode of action of carbetamide involves the inhibition of mitosis, specifically targeting cell division within the meristematic tissues of susceptible weeds. By disrupting these fundamental biological processes, the herbicide effectively halts plant growth, starting from the root uptake phase, which ensures systemic control over the weeds' development.

The primary crops for which carbetamide is registered include alfalfa, clover, rapeseed, and sugar beet. It is particularly valued by agronomists for its ability to selectively eliminate cereal volunteers, black-grass, and various annual meadow grasses without causing phytotoxicity to the main crop when applied according to the label.

Successful application of carbetamide is highly dependent on ambient temperatures. The product exhibits superior performance in cooler weather conditions, typically between 5°C and 12°C. This unique characteristic makes it a vital tool for early-season weed control when other herbicides might be less active due to low temperatures.
