Description

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a colorless, odorless gas used as an active substance for pest control in agriculture, primarily serving as a fumigant for stored products. Due to its status as a naturally occurring atmospheric component, it is considered an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional synthetic chemical insecticides, leaving no toxic residues on crops.

The mechanism of action involves the creation of a high-CO2 and low-oxygen atmosphere within sealed storage structures. This environment effectively induces hypoxia in insects, disrupting their respiratory processes and metabolic balance. The physiological stress caused by the lack of oxygen leads to the dehydration and death of pests, including larvae, pupae, and adult stages of insects.

Carbon dioxide is specifically targeted for use in the protection of bulk stored grains, legumes, oilseeds, and dried fruits. It is highly effective against common storage pests such as the rice weevil, grain moth, and various species of beetles. By maintaining the integrity of stored products, it significantly reduces economic losses caused by infestation during long-term storage.

Successful application requires high standards of storage gas-tightness. The efficiency of the treatment depends on the duration of exposure and the ability to maintain the necessary gas concentration for the entire period. Monitoring systems for gas levels are essential to ensure the dose remains within the lethal range for the target pest population throughout the storage facility.
