Active ingredient

Carfentrazone-ethyl

Description

Carfentrazone-ethyl is a potent active ingredient belonging to the triazolinone chemical class. It functions as a contact-type herbicide, specifically engineered to provide rapid control of various broadleaf weeds in multiple agricultural cropping systems.

The mode of action involves the inhibition of the protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) enzyme. By blocking this enzyme, the compound disrupts chlorophyll synthesis, leading to the accumulation of intermediates that cause membrane lipid peroxidation. Consequently, the weed tissues collapse quickly when exposed to sunlight, resulting in rapid desiccation.

This herbicide is registered for use on several key crops, including cereals, maize, soybeans, sunflowers, and potatoes. It is highly effective against challenging weed species, such as lamb's quarters, velvetleaf, and various pigweed species. It is particularly valued for its ability to control biotypes that have developed resistance to other herbicide classes.

Application requirements emphasize the necessity of achieving thorough spray coverage due to the active ingredient's strictly contact nature. It is commonly employed as a tank-mix partner to boost the performance of other residual herbicides or applied as a harvest aid (desiccant) to simplify the harvesting process by drying out crop and weed vegetation.

Safety precautions must be strictly followed when handling the concentrated product. Operators should wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent skin and eye contact. Furthermore, care must be taken to minimize spray drift, as the compound can cause significant damage to non-target crops if it drifts off-site.
