Casein
Description
Casein is a complex phosphoprotein derived from milk that serves as a highly effective adjuvant and sticker in the agricultural sector. Within the context of crop protection, it is classified not as a pesticide itself, but as a specialized surfactant that optimizes the performance of chemical solutions applied to plants.
The mechanism of action of casein involves modifying the physical properties of the spray droplet. Upon application, it creates a durable and elastic film on the leaf surface. This microscopic coating effectively retains the active ingredients of herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides, preventing them from being washed off by rainfall or degraded by intense UV radiation.
It is widely used across various agricultural crops, including cereals, horticultural plants, and orchards. By enhancing the adhesion of spray droplets, casein ensures that systemic treatments penetrate the plant cuticle more effectively, leading to improved uptake of the active substance and more consistent control over target pests and pathogens.
A significant advantage of using casein is its biodegradable and eco-friendly nature, which makes it an ideal candidate for organic and integrated pest management systems. It exhibits excellent compatibility with most standard pesticide formulations, ensuring that the stability of the tank mix is maintained without compromising the chemical integrity of the active agents.
When applying products containing casein, it is essential to ensure proper mixing order to prevent sedimentation. Operators should generally mix the pesticide with water first before adding the casein-based adjuvant. While the substance is non-toxic to humans and beneficial insects, standard safety precautions, such as the use of protective gear, remain recommended during large-scale spraying operations.
