Description
Chitosan is a natural polysaccharide derived from chitin, typically extracted from crustacean shells. In modern agriculture, it serves as a potent bio-fungicide and elicitor that stimulates the systemic acquired resistance (SAR) of plants. Due to its biocompatibility and biodegradability, it is an essential component for sustainable and organic crop management systems.
The mechanism of action for Chitosan is two-fold. Firstly, it acts as a signaling molecule that triggers the plant's immune system to produce phytoalexins, chitinases, and other defense enzymes. Secondly, it exhibits direct antimicrobial activity by disrupting the cell membranes of various fungi and bacteria, effectively hindering the development of pathogens on the leaf surface.
This substance is effectively used on a wide range of crops including vegetables (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers), cereals, and ornamental plants. It is highly effective in managing diseases such as powdery mildew, gray mold (Botrytis), blight, and various leaf spot pathogens. It is often applied as a seed treatment to enhance germination rates and early seedling vigor.
Chitosan application is characterized by its safety and versatility. It can be integrated into existing spray programs, often showing synergistic effects when combined with other beneficial biological agents. For optimal results, application should be performed during periods of low UV intensity, ensuring thorough coverage of the canopy to maximize the physiological response of the plants.
Regarding safety, Chitosan is recognized for its low toxicity and lack of negative environmental impact. It is safe for humans, bees, and other beneficial fauna. As a standard practice, users should wear gloves and eye protection when handling concentrated products to prevent minor irritation. It requires no specific pre-harvest interval (PHI) as it is non-toxic and environmentally benign.
