Description

Chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) is a potent oxidizing agent widely utilized in the agricultural sector as a highly effective disinfectant and fungicide. Unlike conventional chlorine-based agents, it acts as a selective biocide, rapidly destroying the cell membranes of microorganisms without forming toxic organochlorine compounds in soil or water.

Chemically, the substance belongs to the halogen oxide group. Its mechanism of action relies on a process of deep oxidation: chlorine dioxide penetrates the cell walls of fungi, bacteria, viruses, and spores, disrupting protein synthesis and destroying the pathogen's enzymatic systems. This makes it extremely effective against resistant microbial strains.

In agriculture, the product is primarily used for treating irrigation systems, disinfecting greenhouses, equipment, crates, and storage facilities for produce. It effectively suppresses the development of plant pathogens, such as Pythium and Phytophthora, which are frequently transmitted through water in hydroponic systems and drip irrigation.

The application of chlorine dioxide requires strict adherence to concentrations, as excess levels can negatively affect the root systems of sensitive crops. Application is typically carried out via automated dosing systems, ensuring a consistent level of the active ingredient within the working solution.

When handling this substance, it is essential to use personal protective equipment (gloves, goggles, respirators), as concentrated chlorine dioxide is an irritant to mucous membranes. The product must be stored in a cool, dark environment, away from direct sunlight, as the substance is light-sensitive and potentially explosive at high concentrations.
