Active ingredient

Clodinafop-propargyl

Description

Clodinafop-propargyl is a highly potent active ingredient belonging to the aryloxyphenoxypropionate chemical class. It is widely used in modern agriculture as a systemic, post-emergence selective herbicide specifically designed to control a broad spectrum of annual grass weeds in cereal fields.

The primary mode of action of clodinafop-propargyl is the inhibition of the acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) enzyme. By interrupting this enzyme, the plant ceases the production of essential fatty acids required for membrane synthesis, which leads to the rapid collapse of cellular function and death of the target weed species.

It is primarily employed in wheat cultivation to manage economically damaging weeds. Key target species successfully controlled by this compound include Avena fatua (wild oat), Alopecurus myosuroides (black-grass), Setaria spp. (foxtail), and Phalaris species, which are known to compete heavily for resources in cereal production.

Optimal application is crucial for success, as the herbicide works most effectively when applied to young, actively growing weeds in the 2 to 4-leaf stage. Most commercial formulations include a safener, such as cloquintocet-mexyl, which enhances crop tolerance by promoting the degradation of the herbicide within the crop plant.

  • Avoid application during drought stress.
  • Use appropriate spray volume for uniform coverage.
  • Ensure clean equipment after use to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Follow local regulations regarding protective gear and environmental disposal.

Users must observe strict safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during mixing and application. The product should be kept away from aquatic environments and sensitive non-target vegetation to minimize the ecological footprint and ensure safe handling practices.
