Clopyralid
Description
Clopyralid is a powerful active ingredient belonging to the pyridinecarboxylic acid chemical class. It acts as a selective systemic herbicide primarily used for post-emergence control of a wide range of broad-leaved weeds, particularly those that are difficult to manage with contact herbicides.
The mode of action of clopyralid involves mimicking the plant growth hormone auxin. Once absorbed by the weed, the substance disrupts normal cell division and growth processes, leading to uncontrolled tissue development. This systemically translocates throughout the entire plant, effectively killing not just the foliage but also the root system, which is critical for controlling perennial species.
Clopyralid is widely used in various agricultural crops, including cereals, sugar beet, corn, canola, and flax. It is highly effective against major weed species from the Asteraceae, Fabaceae, and Polygonaceae families, including Canada thistle, sow thistle, and common groundsel, which can compete severely with crops for nutrients and moisture.
The main advantage of using clopyralid is its excellent selectivity, allowing for the protection of broad-leaved crops without causing significant phytotoxicity. It is rainfast shortly after application, making it a reliable tool in varying weather conditions. For maximum efficacy, the herbicide should be applied during the period of active weed growth, ideally at the rosette stage.
- Superior systemic control of deep-rooted perennials.
- Broad compatibility with tank-mix partners.
- High selectivity for maximum crop safety.
- Stable and persistent effectiveness in the target plant.
Safety precautions when handling clopyralid include the mandatory use of protective clothing, gloves, and respiratory equipment to prevent skin and eye contact. Due to its potential for soil persistence, it is vital to follow crop rotation guidelines and observe pre-harvest intervals to ensure that subsequent sensitive crops are not affected by residual amounts of the substance in the soil.
