Description

Copper oxychloride is a widely used inorganic, broad-spectrum, contact fungicide. It plays a significant role in modern agriculture by forming a protective layer on the plant surface, which prevents the germination of fungal spores and the development of bacterial infections. It is a standard tool for integrated pest management programs.

The primary mechanism of action involves the release of copper ions that interfere with the metabolic processes of pathogens. When a fungus contacts the treated surface, the copper ions inhibit vital enzymes and disrupt respiration, ultimately leading to the destruction of the fungal cell structure. Because it is a contact agent, it does not translocate within the plant.

This compound is extensively utilized on various crops, including potatoes, tomatoes, grapes, and pome fruits. It is particularly effective against diseases such as late blight, downy mildew, apple scab, and various leaf spot diseases. Its ability to adhere to foliage makes it a reliable choice for protecting new growth during periods of high disease pressure.

Application timing is crucial for maximizing efficacy. Copper oxychloride is primarily preventive; therefore, it should be applied before the onset of disease symptoms or at the very earliest stages of an outbreak. Regular re-application may be necessary during periods of rapid plant growth or heavy rainfall, typically maintaining an interval of 7 to 14 days depending on crop stage.
