Cow milk

Description

Cow milk is utilized in organic agriculture as a natural, low-risk fungicide and plant immunity booster. It is widely recognized by home gardeners and small-scale farmers as a preventative measure against various fungal pathogens, specifically those that thrive on leaf surfaces.

The primary mechanism of action is the formation of a physical barrier. Upon spraying, the proteins and fats in the milk form a thin, semi-permeable film over the leaf cuticle, which disrupts the germination of fungal spores, particularly those responsible for powdery mildew.

This substance is effectively used on vegetables like cucumbers, squash, and tomatoes, as well as on decorative plants like roses. Beyond its protective antifungal properties, milk acts as a mild foliar fertilizer, providing essential minerals and proteins that promote overall plant vigor and structural integrity.

For application, the milk should be diluted with water, typically at a ratio of 1:5 to 1:10. It is crucial to apply the solution on sunny days, as the combination of sunlight and the milk film enhances the production of free radicals (like hydrogen peroxide) which provide a stronger antiseptic effect against pathogens.

Regarding precautions, users must ensure the solution is applied only as needed to prevent the accumulation of rotting organic matter on leaves, which could potentially harbor other pests or bacteria. It is recommended to use low-fat milk to avoid clogging the stomata of the leaves and to ensure better solubility in the spray tank.
