Active ingredient

Cyhexatin

Description

Cyhexatin is an active ingredient belonging to the organotin chemical class. In modern agriculture, it is used exclusively as a contact acaricide. Its primary purpose is the control of various phytophagous mite species that pose a significant threat to orchard fruits and certain field crops.

The mode of action of cyhexatin involves the inhibition of oxidative phosphorylation within the mitochondria of the target pests. Once in contact with the chemical, mites experience a failure in respiratory metabolism, which leads to paralysis and death. It is highly effective against mobile life stages, including larvae, nymphs, and adults.

The substance is primarily applied to fruit crops such as apples, pears, and grapes. It demonstrates high efficacy against spider mites and European red mites. Due to its selectivity, it often helps maintain the balance of beneficial predatory insects, making it a suitable component of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.

Effective application requires thorough and uniform coverage of the leaf surface, as cyhexatin acts primarily through contact rather than systemic translocation. Because it does not move within the plant tissues, the timing of application relative to the mite life cycle is critical for maximizing its long-lasting residual protection.

Safety precautions when handling cyhexatin are essential due to its inherent toxicity to humans and mammals. Workers must wear appropriate personal protective equipment during mixing and spraying operations. Furthermore, users should strictly adhere to the pre-harvest intervals and avoid any drift into aquatic environments or non-target areas.
