Description

Dazomet is an active ingredient belonging to the thiadiazine chemical class, widely utilized in professional agriculture as a broad-spectrum soil fumigant. It functions as a multipurpose agent capable of eliminating a wide range of soil-borne threats, including weed seeds, harmful fungi, soil insects, and parasitic nematodes.

The mechanism of action involves the chemical decomposition of Dazomet upon contact with soil moisture, which results in the release of methyl isothiocyanate (MITC). This volatile gas diffuses throughout the soil profile, effectively disinfecting the treated layer by disrupting the cellular processes of target organisms, thereby ensuring a clean substrate for subsequent plantings.

This substance is primarily applied in controlled environments such as greenhouses, nurseries, and seedbeds before the planting or sowing of crops. It is particularly effective for high-value vegetable and ornamental production where the control of persistent soil-borne diseases and pests is essential for achieving high yields and quality standards.

Successful application requires careful preparation of the soil, ensuring adequate moisture levels and temperatures above 10°C to facilitate the release of the active gas. To maintain the efficacy of the fumigation process, it is standard practice to cover the treated area with specialized plastic films or to compact the soil, thereby prolonging the exposure time to the gas.

Safety precautions are strictly required when handling Dazomet due to its toxic nature. Applicators must wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and the treated area must be properly ventilated after the recommended incubation period. It is mandatory to conduct a germination bioassay before planting any crop to verify that the soil is free from toxic residues.
