Dicloran

Description

Dicloran (also known as dichloran) is an active ingredient classified within the chloronitroaniline family. It is widely used as a contact fungicide designed to inhibit the growth and development of pathogenic fungi. The substance functions primarily as a protectant, creating a chemical barrier on the plant surface that effectively prevents the germination of fungal spores.

The mechanism of action of Dicloran involves the disruption of metabolic processes within fungal cells. Specifically, it interferes with the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids, which inhibits mycelial growth and stops the reproductive cycle of the pathogen. This makes it a highly potent agent against various fungi belonging to the Ascomycetes and Deuteromycetes groups.

The primary agricultural application of Dicloran includes the control of soil-borne and storage diseases, such as grey mold (Botrytis), sclerotinia rot, and various rhizoctonia diseases. It is commonly applied to vegetables, ornamental plants, and tree fruits. Beyond field application, it is frequently used as a post-harvest treatment to protect produce during transport and storage, significantly reducing losses caused by fungal decay.

Effective application requires thorough and uniform coverage of the target area, as the fungicide provides contact protection rather than systemic action. Because it does not translocate within the plant vascular system, coverage is the limiting factor in its efficacy. It is often recommended for use in integrated pest management (IPM) programs, rotating with other fungicides to prevent the development of resistant fungal strains.

When handling Dicloran, adherence to safety protocols is mandatory. Operators must utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, goggles, and respiratory masks to prevent inhalation or dermal contact. It is essential to follow local regulations regarding pre-harvest intervals (PHI) to ensure that the chemical residues on treated crops remain within acceptable safety limits for human consumption.
