Dimethyl disulphide (DMDS) is a volatile chemical substance classified as an organic disulphide. In modern agricultural practice, it serves as a robust soil fumigant. It has gained global recognition as an effective and safer alternative to methyl bromide, helping growers manage soil-borne pests and diseases without causing significant harm to the ozone layer.

The mechanism of action of DMDS is centered on its rapid gas-phase diffusion through the soil matrix. Upon contact with target organisms, the substance interferes with their metabolic processes, specifically targeting cellular respiration by inhibiting cytochrome c oxidase. This leads to the rapid elimination of nematodes, soil fungi, and even certain weed seeds, effectively sanitizing the root zone.

DMDS is primarily utilized in high-value crop production, including tomatoes, peppers, strawberries, and melons. It is highly effective against a broad range of soil-borne diseases such as Fusarium wilt, Verticillium wilt, and various root-rotting pathogens.
