Ethephon

Ethephon is a potent plant growth regulator belonging to the organophosphorus chemical class. It is widely used in global agriculture as an ethylene-releasing agent, which plays a critical role in controlling various physiological processes in plants, including fruit ripening, flower senescence, and abscission.

The mechanism of action involves the systemic absorption of ethephon by plant tissues, where it undergoes chemical decomposition to release ethylene gas. This hormone accelerates the maturation of fruits by promoting the breakdown of chlorophyll, increasing sugar content, and softening the tissues, which leads to uniform ripening across the crop.

Ethephon is commonly applied to a variety of crops such as tomatoes, cereal grains, cotton, and orchard fruits. In cereal cultivation, it is primarily used to shorten and strengthen stems, thereby preventing lodging (falling over), while in horticulture, it is essential for enhancing fruit color and timing the harvest for maximum efficiency.

Application guidelines emphasize the importance of timing and environmental conditions. The efficacy of ethephon is highly dependent on temperature, with the ideal range being between 15°C and 25°C. Applications during extreme heat or under drought stress are discouraged to prevent potential phytotoxicity or stress to the plants.
