Ethanol is utilized in agricultural practice primarily as an adjuvant and solvent within the formulation of crop protection products. While it is not a primary active ingredient for controlling pests or weeds, it plays a vital role as a carrier and an enhancer that dictates the physical properties of the pesticide formulation, ensuring it remains stable and effective during storage and application.
The mode of action for ethanol is centered on its ability to enhance the permeability of plant surfaces. By reducing the surface tension of spray droplets, ethanol facilitates a more uniform coverage of the leaf. Furthermore, it interacts with the epicuticular waxes, temporarily increasing their permeability, which allows active ingredients to penetrate the leaf tissue more efficiently and rapidly, which is particularly beneficial for systemic pesticides.
The application of ethanol-based formulations spans a wide array of crops, including cereals, oilseeds, and horticultural varieties. By improving the spreading coefficient and absorption rate, ethanol helps in maximizing the biological performance of fungicides and insecticides, ensuring the chemicals reach their target sites effectively, even on leaves with dense or waxy cuticles that would otherwise repel aqueous solutions.
Regarding application specifics, it is essential to monitor environmental conditions. Because ethanol is highly volatile, excessive heat during spraying can influence the drying rate of droplets, potentially leading to localized phytotoxicity if the active ingredients are absorbed too rapidly. Farmers should always conduct compatibility tests when mixing ethanol-containing products with other surfactants to prevent unintended damage to sensitive crops.
Safety measures are critical when handling pesticide formulations containing ethanol. Operators must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), as ethanol can act as a skin penetration enhancer, making the active ingredients more easily absorbed through the human skin. Proper storage is also essential, as these products are often flammable and must be kept in a well-ventilated area, away from sparks, open flames, and direct sunlight.
