Fat distillation residues

Fat distillation residues are complex mixtures of fatty acids and derivatives resulting from the refining process of fats and oils. In modern agronomy, these substances are utilized as contact-based active ingredients with significant insecticidal and acaricidal properties, often employed in eco-friendly pest management programs.

The primary mode of action is purely physical rather than biochemical. Upon application, the formulation creates a thin hydrophobic film over the surface of the pest. This barrier clogs the spiracles, effectively suffocating the insect or mite. This mechanism is highly effective because it prevents the development of physiological resistance among pest populations.

These substances are widely applied in greenhouses, orchards, and field vegetable production. They are specifically targeted against soft-bodied pests such as aphids, spider mites, whiteflies, and mealybugs. These pests are notorious for their rapid reproduction and ability to cause significant economic losses by damaging plant tissues.

Application requirements are stringent regarding coverage: since the action is contact-dependent, thorough spraying is essential, particularly targeting the underside of leaves where pests often hide. It is recommended to apply during early morning or late evening to minimize the risk of phytotoxicity, which can occur if the leaves are exposed to direct sunlight while coated with the oily residue.

Regarding safety, fat distillation residues are considered low-toxicity to humans and beneficial vertebrates, making them suitable for integrated pest management (IPM) systems. However, users should always perform a small-scale compatibility test before mixing with other pesticides, as the oil-based nature of the product might affect the stability of other active compounds.
