Frequently referred to as "insecticidal soaps," these substances are derived from natural sources and are valued for their minimal environmental impact and effectiveness against soft-bodied pests.

The primary mechanism of action is physical rather than systemic. When the solution contacts the pest, it strips away the protective waxy layer of the cuticle. This disruption leads to rapid desiccation and the collapse of the insect's cellular membranes. Because the action is physical, insects do not develop resistance to this substance, making it an excellent tool for integrated pest management programs.

This compound is used on a wide range of crops, including fruits, vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants, both in greenhouses and open fields. It is highly effective against aphids, whiteflies, spider mites, mealybugs, and various leafhoppers. Additionally, it offers suppression of powdery mildew by disrupting the fungal hyphae present on the surface of the plant foliage.

Application guidelines emphasize the following:

• thorough coverage is essential, ensuring the underside of leaves is fully wetted;
• applications should be scheduled during cooler times of the day to prevent phytotoxic leaf burn;
• multiple applications may be necessary as the product has no residual activity once it dries.

Regarding safety, potassium salts of fatty acids are considered low-toxicity substances, but direct contact with concentrated solutions can cause skin and eye irritation. Personnel should wear appropriate personal protective equipment during handling.
