Description

Ferric pyrophosphate is a highly effective inorganic molluscicide widely used in professional agriculture and horticulture to control populations of slugs and snails. Unlike synthetic molluscicides, this substance is categorized as an environmentally friendly control agent. It acts as an iron-based compound that is safe for the environment, wildlife, and beneficial soil microorganisms, making it an excellent candidate for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs.

The mechanism of action is based on the ingestion of the product by gastropods. Once consumed, the ferric pyrophosphate causes a rapid cessation of feeding activity due to the disruption of the mollusk's digestive system. The iron ions interfere with metabolic processes, causing the target pests to lose their appetite, dehydrate, and eventually die. A significant advantage is that slugs typically retreat to their hiding places beneath the soil or debris before dying, keeping the area free of visible pest carcasses.

This substance is commonly applied to a wide range of crops, including leafy vegetables, cabbages, strawberries, hostas, and other susceptible ornamental plants. Because it is formulated as a bait, it is highly targeted, minimizing exposure to other organisms. Modern formulations are designed to be weather-resistant, meaning the pellets maintain their palatability and efficacy even under moist or rainy conditions, which is exactly when slug activity is at its peak.

In terms of application, the pellets should be spread evenly across the soil surface around the plants that require protection. The application rate is typically determined based on the observed density of the slug population. For best results, treatments should commence as soon as signs of damage appear, ideally during the early stages of plant growth when seedlings are most vulnerable to defoliation.
