Fluopicolide

Fluopicolide is a systemic and translaminar fungicide belonging to the benzamide (pyridinyl-methyl-benzamide) chemical class. It is specifically designed to control plant diseases caused by Oomycetes, including some of the most destructive agricultural pathogens worldwide.

The mode of action of fluopicolide is unique, involving the delocalization of spectrin-like proteins in the fungal cell cytoskeleton. This process causes the rapid collapse of the cell structure, which leads to the immediate cessation of zoospore motility and the inhibition of spore germination and mycelial growth.

This active ingredient is commonly applied to a wide variety of crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, vines, onions, and various cucurbits. Its primary target is the control of late blight (Phytophthora infestans) and downy mildew (Peronospora spp.), providing both preventative and curative control.

A key agronomic advantage is its excellent translaminar activity, which allows the compound to move through the leaf tissue, offering protection even to areas of the foliage that were not directly sprayed. Furthermore, it exhibits strong anti-sporulant activity, effectively reducing the source of inoculum for subsequent infections in the field.

Safety and resistance management are critical when using fluopicolide. It is highly recommended to include it as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) program by rotating it with fungicides possessing different modes of action. Operators should always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow local regulations regarding chemical handling to ensure safety during application.
