Fluroxypyr

Fluroxypyr is a highly effective active ingredient belonging to the pyridinecarboxylic acid chemical class. It is a selective post-emergence herbicide primarily used to control a wide range of broadleaf weeds in various agricultural crops, providing excellent systemic activity within the plant.

The mode of action for fluroxypyr is categorized as a synthetic auxin (growth regulator). Once absorbed by the foliage, it translocates through the plant and disrupts hormone-regulated cell growth. This causes the characteristic epinasty—twisting and curling of leaves and stems—which leads to the eventual collapse of the weed's vascular system and total plant death.

Fluroxypyr is predominantly used in cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and oats, as well as in maize, onions, and pastures. It is internationally recognized for its outstanding performance against hard-to-control weeds like cleavers (Galium aparine), field bindweed, and various chickweed species, which are often resistant to other common herbicide families.

Effective application requires targeting weeds during their phase of active growth. Because it works systemically, environmental conditions that promote plant metabolic activity improve the efficacy of the herbicide. Fluroxypyr is characterized by its lack of residual soil activity, which provides farmers with the flexibility to rotate crops without fear of herbicide carryover in the following season.
