Fosetyl-aluminium

Description

Fosetyl-aluminium is a systemic fungicide belonging to the phosphonate chemical class. It is specifically designed to combat plant pathogens from the Oomycetes class, which are responsible for some of the most destructive diseases in modern agriculture, including downy mildews, late blight, and various types of root rot.

The primary advantage of this active substance is its true systemic movement within the plant. Unlike many other fungicides that stay only on the leaf surface or move strictly upward, fosetyl-aluminium exhibits both acropetal and basipetal translocation. This means it travels from the leaves to the roots and from the roots to the newly developing shoots, providing comprehensive protection to all plant tissues.

Beyond its direct fungicidal activity, which involves disrupting the metabolism and spore production of the pathogen, fosetyl-aluminium acts as a powerful elicitor of plant defense mechanisms. By stimulating the production of phytoalexins and other natural defense compounds, the substance induces systemic acquired resistance, making the plant more resilient to future infections.

This compound is extensively used in horticulture, viticulture, and vegetable production. It is highly effective in managing:

  • Downy mildew in grapes and other crops.
  • Phytophthora blight and root rots in vegetables and fruit trees.
  • Pythium species affecting nurseries and turfgrass.
  • Late blight in potatoes and tomatoes.

Application guidelines emphasize that fosetyl-aluminium should not be tank-mixed with copper-based products or foliar fertilizers containing high levels of nitrogen, as these may cause phytotoxicity or reduced absorption. Because it has a preventative mode of action, the best results are achieved when applications occur before the disease pressure becomes severe. Proper protective gear should be worn during handling to ensure operator safety.
